BSWML to Relocate Ramesh Nagar-HAL Airport Road Garbage Transfer Site

BSWML to Relocate Ramesh Nagar-HAL Airport Road Garbage Transfer Site

A one-kilometre stretch on the main road between Ramesh Nagar and HAL Airport Road has turned into a major nuisance for commuters and residents due to roadside garbage transfer operations and leaking leachate. The stretch, situated directly behind the HAL East Primary and High School compound, has seen stationary waste vehicles blocking pedestrian paths and spreading foul odours that disrupt students and teachers.

Sanitation workers operating under Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) have been using the footpaths to transfer refuse from auto tippers into larger compactor vehicles. The resulting discharge of leachate and overflowing waste has left footpaths on both sides unusable and hazardous for daily commuters walking to catch BMTC buses toward Marathahalli and surrounding areas.

Local residents and regular commuters expressed deep frustration over the deteriorating civic conditions. Pratap N, a pedestrian who uses the road to reach HAL Airport Road, noted that the footpaths have ceased to be pedestrian-friendly and appealed to authorities to clear the garbage and nuisance. Narayana Gowda, a resident of Ramesh Nagar, stated that BSWML had effectively turned the thoroughfare into an unhygienic transfer station where workers fail to clean up spilled waste and leachate.

In addition to the official transfer operations, a vacant plot along the school compound wall has been turned into an informal dumping ground for mixed waste and construction and demolition debris. Pedestrian Pooja S pointed out that the local police station is situated just a few hundred metres away, calling on civic authorities to deploy marshals, impound vehicles, and file criminal cases against violators dumping debris.

Pedestrians, including employees returning from workplaces in Whitefield and Marathahalli after dark, also raised safety concerns over poor lighting caused by overgrown tree branches. Former Vignana Nagar ward corporator SG Nagaraj assured residents that arrangements would be made to trim the overgrown branches along the stretch.

Addressing the public outcry, BSWML Assistant General Manager Srinidhi stated that the agency will take measures to shift the garbage transfer station to another location to relieve commuters. The official also committed to deploying marshals to monitor the vacant stretch along the HAL East Primary and High School wall and prevent illegal dumping.
