BMRCL Details Crowd Control Measures for Freedom Hubba in Bengaluru

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has outlined the crowd-management operations executed across central Bengaluru, including key transit points near MG Road, to handle massive commuter footfall during the Independence Day Freedom Hubba celebrations.

According to BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer BL Yashwanth Chavan, preparations began with advance planning around Vidhana Soudha. The Dr BR Ambedkar (Vidhana Soudha) Metro Station was closed for passenger entry and exit starting at 10 am, while additional train services were deployed to meet the high ridership demand throughout the day.

The most significant surge occurred during the evening hours around Vidhana Soudha, leading to a sharp rise in passenger movement at Cubbon Park and Sir M Visvesvaraya stations. To prevent overcrowding on platforms and facilitate safe dispersal, trains bypassed both stations without stopping between 7:21 pm and 9:57 pm, while continuing to run along the line.

Commuters holding tickets for Cubbon Park or Sir M Visvesvaraya-Central College stations were permitted to exit at MG Road or Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station, Majestic, without incurring any additional fare. Passenger advisories were disseminated within five minutes through station public address systems, Passenger Information Displays, and social media channels.

To expedite movement, metro staff operated manual and hinged gates where necessary. Additional security personnel were stationed at Majestic, which recorded exceptionally heavy footfall during the celebrations.

Normal operations resumed once crowd levels decreased. Trains began stopping again at Cubbon Park and Sir M Visvesvaraya stations at 9:57 pm, and entry and exit at Dr BR Ambedkar (Vidhana Soudha) Metro Station reopened after 10:05 pm.

BMRCL stated that insights from the event will guide future crowd management strategies for large public gatherings, focusing on advance passenger-flow modeling, enhanced staffing, and timely commuter notifications. The corporation also acknowledged the coordination of the police and other supporting agencies.
