Benniganahalli Double-Decker Rail Corridor Saves K-Ride Up To Rs 169 Crore

BENGALURU — A collaborative double-decker corridor plan at Benniganahalli has saved up to Rs 169 crore in construction costs for the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited. The infrastructure project integrates the Bengaluru Metro's Blue Line and the Bengaluru Suburban Transport Project's Kanaka Line into a single shared structure.
The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited, also known as K-Ride, is the implementing agency for the Bengaluru Suburban Transport Project. According to a report published by K-Ride, this innovative rail engineering solution resulted in project expenditure savings ranging between Rs 150 crore and Rs 169 crore.
The coordination behind the joint infrastructure began in 2021, when K-Ride and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd entered into a formal agreement. The two organizations decided to coordinate their plans to avoid overlapping construction and optimize resources in the Benniganahalli area.
Under the finalized plan, the double-decker rail corridor will accommodate both the metro and suburban rail systems. The design integrates the suburban line's Corridor 4, also known as the Kanaka Line, with the Metro's Blue Line viaduct.
By stacking the transit systems into a single double-decker structure, the agencies successfully eliminated the need for separate standalone corridors. This engineering approach not only minimized the physical footprint of the transit lines in Benniganahalli but also significantly reduced the overall expenditure for the implementing agency.
