Bengaluru's Iconic Urvashi Theatre on Lalbagh Main Road Demolished After 55 Years

Demolition work has begun at Bengaluru's iconic Urvashi Theatre on Lalbagh Main Road near Lalbagh, bringing down the curtains on one of the city's oldest and most famous single-screen cinemas after 55 years of operation. Mechanical excavators were deployed on the premises on Monday as workers began clearing the structure and stripping down interior fixtures.

The demolition marks the culmination of a protracted legal battle over the land on which the theatre stood. The property had originally been leased from landowners, including Basatti Shetty, but the lease agreement expired in 2018. Following years of legal proceedings between the theatre owners and the property owners, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the landowners, paving the way for the site to be reclaimed.

Crews on site have started removing chairs, projection equipment, and other fittings from inside the auditorium as the building is dismantled to make way for a new chapter.

Urvashi Theatre was inaugurated in 1970 by Kannada cinema's matinee idol, Dr Rajkumar. Over the ensuing five and a half decades, the venue became a cornerstone of Bengaluru’s cinema landscape and a familiar gathering spot for generations of movie enthusiasts across the city.

With a seating capacity exceeding 1,150, the single-screen hall regularly hosted packed shows, exuberant first-day-first-show celebrations, and extended theatrical runs for major releases in Kannada and various other Indian languages. The theatre played a notable role in the exhibition history of Kannada cinema, having screened numerous milestone films throughout its operational run.

In addition to its cultural prominence, Urvashi Theatre earned a reputation for adopting modern cinema technology ahead of its peers. It was among the earliest movie houses in Bengaluru to upgrade to 4K digital projection systems and install advanced sound technology to enhance the viewing experience for audiences.

The demolition of the historic venue on Lalbagh Main Road represents another significant departure from Bengaluru’s traditional single-screen movie culture, which has steadily declined as multiplexes and newer commercial entertainment spaces have expanded across the city.
