Bengaluru Overtakes Mumbai as India's Startup Capital in Hurun U30 List

Bengaluru has officially overtaken Mumbai to become India's new startup capital and largest startup headquarters hub, according to the newly released Avendus Wealth-Hurun India U30 List 2026. The city secured the top spot after a significant increase in the number of young entrepreneurs featured on the list, cementing its position as the country's primary destination for technology startups.

In the 2025 edition of the list, Bengaluru ranked second behind Mumbai with only seven entrepreneurs. In the 2026 rankings, Bengaluru climbed to the number one spot with 21 entrepreneurs making the cut.

Bengaluru also emerged as the country’s largest startup headquarters hub. Out of the companies featured on the U30 list, 18 are headquartered in Bengaluru. Mumbai followed in second place with nine headquarters, while Gurugram recorded eight.

Riding on Bengaluru’s performance, Karnataka topped the state rankings with 22 entrepreneurs. This more than doubled the state's tally of 10 from the previous year, overtaking every other state in the country.

The latest rankings indicate a shift in the national startup landscape. While Mumbai previously held an edge due to its concentration of consumer brands, fintech companies, and direct-to-consumer businesses, the market focus has shifted toward DeepTech and HardTech. Bengaluru maintains a clear advantage in these sectors.

Karnataka IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge welcomed the achievement, stating that the rankings reflect the evolution of India's innovation economy. Kharge noted that the startup ecosystem is becoming younger, increasingly DeepTech-driven, and more focused on hardware innovation.

Kharge added that the Karnataka state government will continue investing in DeepTech, research and development, skilling, and founder-friendly policies to ensure the state remains a preferred destination for globally competitive companies.

Bengaluru is currently recognized as the world's sixth-largest tech hub. The city features a talent pool of more than 1.5 million tech professionals, a startup base of over 13,000 startups, and 28 unicorns. Additionally, Bengaluru ranks third globally in wealth growth, recording a 120 percent rise in the number of millionaires.
