Bengaluru Eco Activists Relaunch No Balloons Campaign for Independence Day

Ahead of Independence Day, Bengaluru-based eco activists from the citizen volunteer community Beautiful Bharath renewed their 'No Balloons Please' campaign across the city. The initiative urges citizens, local communities, and commercial establishments to refrain from using balloons and conducting balloon releases during holiday celebrations, advocating instead for reusable and compostable decorative alternatives.

The campaign underscores the environmental, civic, and public health hazards posed by traditional balloon usage. According to volunteers from Beautiful Bharath, most balloons are single-use and non-recyclable products that quickly turn into landfill waste or unrecoverable street litter. Over time, these fragments break down into smaller particles and microplastics, which contaminate soil and wash into urban drains and water bodies during rains. When this debris reaches marine environments, species such as turtles can mistake balloon fragments for food, while strings often entangle birds and other wildlife.

In addition to ecological damage, the activists detailed several human safety risks associated with balloons. The group cited choking hazards for infants caused by small balloon fragments, widespread latex allergies, and fire hazards linked to hydrogen-filled balloons placed near heat sources. The campaign also flagged infrastructure risks, noting that foil balloons can cause power line incidents when coming into contact with electrical cables. Furthermore, using helium for party balloons drains a finite resource that has essential medical applications.

To replace single-use items, the campaign is actively promoting sustainable materials like cloth, paper, and fresh flowers. Cloth decorations can be saved and reused for future events, paper can be repurposed or recycled, and natural flowers can be composted.

Highlighting the motivation behind the initiative, Beautiful Bharath community founder Odette Katrak emphasized that celebrations should not cause distress to other living creatures. Katrak stated that giving up balloons does not mean sacrificing celebrations, but rather celebrating with greater responsibility. She noted that while eco-friendly alternatives exist, there remains a gap in public awareness and local availability, which the volunteer group is currently working to address so citizens can access sustainable options.
