Bengaluru civic polls for Greater Bengaluru Authority scheduled for December 2026

Bengaluru civic polls for Greater Bengaluru Authority scheduled for December 2026

On Friday, July 17, 2026, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the civic polls for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) in Bengaluru are scheduled to be held by the end of December 2026. This development follows a key decision by the Supreme Court, which has granted the government an extension of time to conduct these local elections.

According to the Chief Minister, the government had approached the Supreme Court to request additional time until December 31 to organize and conduct the civic polls. The extension was sought due to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, also known as the SIR, of the electoral rolls. The Supreme Court accepted the government's request and granted the extension.

Beyond the Greater Bengaluru Authority elections, the timeline for other local body elections has also been outlined. Mr. Shivakumar confirmed that elections for district, taluk, gram panchayat, and municipal local bodies are expected to be fully completed by the end of March 2027.

The upcoming elections are expected to bring a wave of new political participants into the local governance system. The Chief Minister announced that the Congress party is planning to provide significant opportunities for youth and new faces in these forthcoming local body elections. This approach will apply to all levels of local governance, ranging from Gram Panchayats all the way to municipal corporations.

Mr. Shivakumar also emphasized the broader democratic goals behind these upcoming elections. He stated that the government remains fully committed to implementing the spirit of both the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. By doing so, the government aims to strengthen local self-governance and deepen the decentralisation of power.

The announcement, which was made on Friday, July 17, 2026, sets a clear roadmap for the local administration and political parties preparing for the upcoming polls in Bengaluru and other parts of the region.
