BDA Completes 1,441 Percolation Wells Across 77 Parks and Residential Layouts
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has completed the construction of 1,441 rainwater-harvesting percolation wells across 77 BDA parks and residential premises. The infrastructure is estimated to recharge 184.59 million litres, or 18.459 crore litres, of rainwater annually into the city's groundwater table.
BDA Chairman N.A. Haris formally handed over the completed wells to the concerned BDA authorities during a programme held at Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, 4th Block, on Thursday. The local authority divisions will now take charge of the routine maintenance and upkeep of these structures.
The initiative was executed under the ‘One Billion Drops (OBD) – Groundwater Recharge through Percolation Wells’ project. The work was carried out by United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe) in collaboration with the BDA between February 2025 and February 2026.
Speaking at the handover event, Haris emphasised the critical importance of water conservation for the city. He stated that Bengaluru’s water security depends on how effectively water is conserved and recharged, adding that every drop recharged strengthens the city's future and that the percolation wells would enhance groundwater levels and overall urban resilience.
According to the BDA, the project is estimated to benefit approximately 82,300 residents. The agency noted that the network of wells will curb surface runoff, accelerate groundwater replenishment, and contribute directly to flood mitigation and climate resilience efforts across the city.
The wells, which are generally around 12 feet deep, were built following geological and GIS-based assessments. These evaluations identified suitable sites based on recharge potential, runoff patterns, available open space, and long-term maintenance feasibility. Structurally, the percolation wells incorporate concrete rings, aggregate packing, iron mesh, and protective covers.
Alongside the handover, the BDA launched GreenBengaluruByBDA.in, a digital platform designed to track greening initiatives, sapling health, and ongoing maintenance. The portal will also provide educational tours, volunteering opportunities, and an avenue for citizen queries.
