Bangalore University Study Finds Heavy Metal Contamination Near Closed Landfill

A scientific study conducted by researchers from Bangalore University has revealed heavy metal contamination in the groundwater near a closed landfill in Bengaluru.

The research was carried out by M Bamini and RK Somashekar from the Department of Environmental Science at Bangalore University. The study focused on assessing the water quality in the areas surrounding the decommissioned landfill site.

To conduct the assessment, the researchers analyzed 120 groundwater samples. These samples were collected from 51 different borewells located in the vicinity of the closed landfill.

The sampling and analysis took place over a period of two years, spanning between 2022 and 2024. This timeframe allowed the researchers to monitor the groundwater quality across two complete hydrological cycles.

According to the findings, the analysis of the collected samples confirmed the presence of heavy metal contamination in the local groundwater source. The study highlights the environmental impact of the closed landfill on the surrounding groundwater resources, raising concerns about the water quality in the affected borewells.
