Architect B Ganesh Babu Showcases 35 Sketches of Japan at Basavanagudi Gallery

An art exhibition titled 'Sketching Japan – An Architect’s Visual Journey' by Bengaluru-based architect B Ganesh Babu is currently on display at the Indian Institute of World Culture (IIWC) art gallery on BP Wadia Road in Basavanagudi. The exhibition features 35 sketches documenting his travels and observations across Japan.

The show represents a confluence of Ganesh's two primary interests: sketching and Japanese culture, landscape, and language. Having practiced architecture and interior design for nearly four decades, Ganesh creates what he refers to as 'Drawelogues' — visual travelogues recording his impressions of places he visits.

Born in South Bengaluru and educated in Basavanagudi, Ganesh began sketching during his school years, drawing cartoons that were published in Kannada newspapers and magazines. He noted that his early passion for drawing eventually guided him toward architecture, allowing him to merge observation, creativity, and sketching within his professional career.

His visit to Japan was inspired by his interest in the Japanese language, which he learned to read and speak at a basic level. During the trip, he captured various moments and settings, noting the coexistence of the country's rich heritage alongside modern development. These works were gradually compiled into a comprehensive visual narrative of the country.

Ganesh primarily creates his artwork using pen and ink on paper as well as digital media. Among his recent works are detailed renderings of the Fukushima Palace in Japan and the Tulasi Thota Krishna temple in Bengaluru, representing connections to both Japanese heritage and his home city.

Looking ahead, Ganesh plans to document architectural landmarks closer to home, focusing on Bengaluru’s historic temples, their design, and the local stories connected to them. He also aims to compile his travel sketches into a published book.

The exhibition is open to the public with free entry at IIWC in Basavanagudi from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm daily through September 1, 2026.
