22-Year-Old IISc MTech Student Dies by Suicide in Bengaluru Hostel

A 22-year-old MTech student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) allegedly died by suicide by hanging in his hostel room on the campus under the Sadashivanagar police station limits on Thursday.
The incident came to light during the early hours of Thursday when the hostel warden found the student hanging in his room and immediately alerted the Sadashivanagar police. Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the body for a post-mortem examination.
The deceased student, a native of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, was residing alone in his hostel room on the institute campus. Investigators recovered a death note from the premises during the preliminary inspection.
According to a senior police officer, initial investigations indicated that the student was distressed following a recent breakup with his girlfriend. The body was subsequently handed over to his family members after formalities were completed. The police have registered a case of unnatural death, and further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
This marks the second such incident at the premier institute within a short span. Barely two weeks prior, a 19-year-old BTech student allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on the IISc campus, where preliminary investigations had pointed to academic stress as a possible reason.
Following Thursday's incident, IISc authorities expressed their condolences to the student's family and friends. The administration urged students, faculty, and staff to seek support whenever needed, reiterating that its 24x7 emergency mental health support service remains accessible at 080-47113444.
